The Sanguinello orange, also known as “Il Sanguinello,” is a specific variety of orange with Sicilian red flesh. Looking at it from the outside, it is impossible not to recognize it immediately. Its peel, quite thick and consistent, has a beautiful deep orange color with streaks tending to red. The flesh, on the other hand, has red streaks of different gradations, with few seeds and an only slightly sour taste. Being very juicy, the sanguinello orange is perfectly suited to the preparation of juices, which are also veined with red. The fruit ripens throughout February, although it continues to grow until early spring. Compared to other types of blood oranges, the Sanguinello variety is characterized by a very low level of acidity. This peculiarity, makes it suitable for all types of consumers, even there prefer sweet and delicate flavors.

The Origin of the Blood Orange

According to expert opinion, the origin of the sanguinello orange dates back to 1929. During a specific expedition, they were discovered in Spain and then transported and cultivated in Sicily. The presence of the red streaks-which are found both on the peel and in the flesh-is linked to the territory of cultivation (provinces of Enna, Siracusa, Ragusa and Catania). This characteristic, in fact, develops only in cases where the orange is grown in a place where the thermal excursion between day and night is particularly pronounced. Above all, the excursion must be significant during the period of ripening of the fruit, as is the case in Sicily.
