Chestnut varieties

Chestnuts come in a variety of shapes, sizes and flavor profiles, so a good first step is to learn a few things about them. There are two types of chestnuts: black and brown. The darker-colored variety can be eaten raw or steamed and usually has a sweeter, richer flavor similar to nuts. Lighter colored chestnuts (the brown ones) are usually roasted. The texture of darker chestnuts tends to be a bit thicker and chewier than lighter-colored chestnuts, but they are equally nutritious and delicious. Some people prefer the taste of black chestnuts, but the smaller size and sweet flavor of brown chestnuts make them easier to handle and find commercially.

Health benefits of chestnuts

Chestnuts have been an iconic part of Asian cuisine for thousands of years. Researchers suspect that chestnuts may play a role in reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol, preventing anemia and controlling blood sugar. In Chinese culture, chestnuts are considered a sacred food that can ward off evil spirits and also offer protection from heart disease. The glutens in chestnuts may be useful for diabetics.

How to cook chestnuts

Baked chestnuts

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. On the flat surface of each chestnut, cut out an “X” shape with the tip of a knife. This will allow steam to escape from the chestnuts, speeding up the roasting process. Lay the cut part of the chestnuts on a baking sheet. To help them roast, wet them lightly with water. Roast the chestnuts for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the skins are removed easily. Turn them with a spoon or spatula every few minutes as they cook to prevent burning. Remove them from the oven once they are done roasting. Let the chestnuts cool for 2-3 minutes before wrapping them in a dish towel and squeezing them until the skin is crushed. Leave them for another 5 minutes in the dishcloth. Remove the chestnuts from the skin. To make the process easier, do this while they are still warm. Remove the inner peel and membranes. Enjoy these treats while they are still warm.

Boiled Chestnuts

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cut the flat part of the chestnuts into an “X” shape with a sharp knife. Boil the chestnuts for about 5-10 minutes. Remove them from the hot water and let the chestnuts cool for at least 5 minutes or long enough to handle without scalding. Remove the skins and membranes. These chestnuts are delicious eaten on their own or if you want to try something fancier add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon melted butter.

Microwave chestnuts

Each chestnut should be cut in half as it will cook faster and more evenly. You can use the same settings for “potatoes” in the microwave because chestnuts cook similarly to potatoes. Depending on the power of your microwave, this should take 2 to 5 minutes. To serve, you can pull them out directly with a teaspoon before eating and season them the same as boiled ones.

Chestnuts in the pan

Wash the chestnuts and before putting them in the pan, cut the usual X so that they cook all over. Place the chestnuts back with the flat side facing down. Place the pan on the stove for 5-10 minutes. This should be enough to cook the chestnuts on one side. To disperse the heat evenly, shake the pan lightly every minute or so. Repeat the same process for another 5 minutes or until the chestnuts are visibly toasted. Wait 2-3 minutes for them to cool after roasting and then enjoy them while they are still warm. Conclusion
Now that you have discovered how to cook chestnuts, it is your turn to prove that these chestnuts are indeed delicious. Good luck!
